The Tedeschi family has been in the Napa Valley for several generations. Eugene Tedeschi planted the first grapes on their Calistoga property in the 1960s. Today, Emil Tedeschi produces hand-crafted wines in the tradition of his family's winemaking heritage.
In 1919 the first generation of the Tedeschi family emigrated from Italy to Providence, Rhode Island. Months after, they moved to California where they started their first company, assisting with the lettering and pin striping for the Wells Fargo stagecoaches. Later that same year, the family moved to Calistoga, a small town in the northern Napa Valley.
Eugene Tedeschi purchased our home and winery's current estate in the 1950s, here in Calistoga. When he purchased it, there were acres of various fruit trees, including apples and persimmons. As proper stewart and to savor the beauty, he planted his grapevines between the trees, with rows of grapes intertwining with the diverse fruit trees. He planted many varieties of grapes including Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Petite Sirah.
Eugene's son Emil moved to Hawaii in 1974 to co-found a new vineyard and winery, Tedeschi Vineyards in Maui, which has become one of the most famous wineries in Hawaii.
Emil Tedeschi moved his family back to the Napa Valley in 1991 to accomplish his dream of redeveloping his father’s orchards in Calistoga and starting up his own small, family operated winery. Today, the dream has been realized.
Emil, along with his two sons, Emilio & Mario and his daughter Elaine, continue their commitment to handcrafting award winning, old-world style wines that are true to their terroir, and enjoyed by friends and family, alike.
The Tedeschi Family wines represent an original “vine-to-table” experience.
Emil Tedeschi, Founder & Winemaker Emeritus
Emil was born in the Calistoga Hospital and raised on the current winery estate. In his early 20’s, with a thirst for adventure, he traveled the globe and landed in Hawaii. There he, along with Pardee Erdman dreamt of the possibilities and cofounded Tedeschi Vineyards, Maui Wine that is still active and famous for both still wine and sparkling wine made from pineapple. In 1991 Emil returned to Napa Valley and his childhood home along with a new wife and family. He planted the estate’s first commercial vineyard, Cabernet Sauvignon, a departure from the family's walnut and fruit orchards. Today, he is our Winemaker Emeritus as the two oldest of his children have inherited his dream of an artisan winery, producing old world style wines, with techniques passed from generation to generation. When you visit the winery, you may likely meet Emil in the family gardens or tending to his bee hives.
Emilio Tedeschi, General Manager
Emilio was born in Hawaii on the island of Maui, and moved to Calistoga at 3 years old as fourth generation and ultimately, steward to the family homestead and winery dream. Having graduated high school with honors here in Napa, Emilio attended Gonzaga University in Washington state, where he completed a degree in B.S. Biochemistry. Today, Emilio is realizing his own dream as well as his father’s while attending Sonoma State University with the goal of a MBA in Wine Business. You can meet Emilio in the winery office or more likely the Tasting Room as he is a vital part of all aspects of the winery and sincerely enjoys sharing the wine with visitors.
Mario Tedeschi, Winemaker & Vineyard Manager
Mario was even younger than his brother when he came back to Calistoga. He too, grew up in this small farming community but unlike Emilio, Mario felt his wings spread right here at home, in the vineyards. Mario is a farmer at heart like his father, grandfather and great-grandfather before him. Mario learned winemaking alongside his father, absorbing generations of winemaking skills and techniques starting at a very early age. Today, Mario farms several of the vineyards supplying grapes for Tedeschi Family wines along with his father’s Cabernet vineyard. Mario is often happy to speak with visitors as they pass him on the winery’s crush pad or while he is passing them on the tractor heading to the vineyard.
Aunt Fran Tedeschi, Director of 'Estate Aestetics'
Frances Tedeschi was born and raised here in Calistoga, along with her brother. She has enjoyed traveling and living in exotic and exciting places like San Francisco but has retired to the family homestead here in Calistoga. Today, you can find “Aunt” Fran directing “aesthetics” around the estate, arranging flower bouquets to adorn the tasting room and organizing trays of delectable offerings to accompany our wines at special, onsite events. In recognition of Aunt Fran’s contributions, Emilio and Mario create a wine each year and name it “Aunt Fran’s Pick”, expressive of the lively character and lightheartedness she brings to our family daily, through her bright floral arrangements, and authentic Italian cooking.
